Award-Winning Winery Design: Nago Pineapple Park

Shinjiro Heshiki and Akiko Higashi's Innovative Approach to Retail Space

The winery's design inspiration stems from a fusion of a French Napa winery's taste, a contemporary style with moderate Okinawan and exotic touches, and a traditional century style. The designers aimed to create a space that symbolizes the new Nago Pineapple Park, which has inherited and brushed up the historic Nago Pineapple Park and will be loved even more in the future.

What sets this design apart is the huge object designed in the atrium space that forms a focal point with its overwhelming presence. This object, made of steel, is a pineapple wine brewing machine. The designers aimed to create a space where adults can enjoy the image, taste, and color of pineapples.

The realization of this design was achieved by combining different materials such as wood, metal, mosaic tiles, antique glass, and stained glass in a well-balanced manner. The Nago Pineapple Park Winery project team have tried a century design that will last for 100 years.

The first art object visitors see as they pass through the entrance is a giant wine-making machine. The height is 14 meters, and the ceiling height is effectively used by upper lighting. The lower part functions as a wine cellar and is displayed with indirect lighting. Around the cellar is a counter lounge for wine tasting and snacks.

The project started in Okinawa in January 2019, finished construction in May 2020, and opened in Nago Okinawa in June 2020. Despite the challenges posed by the Covid19 pandemic, the team managed to complete the project and open the winery to the public.

This Design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2021. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
